Travelling Vietnam for the First Time: A Simple Route
A practical first-timer route through Vietnam, from busy city streets to slower coastal days.

Vietnam is easiest to enjoy when you leave room for the unexpected. Build a route around two or three places instead of trying to cross the whole country in one trip.
Start in Hanoi
Give yourself a few days to settle into the pace of the Old Quarter. Walk early, stop for coffee, and keep one afternoon open for wandering without a checklist.
Choose one slower stop
After Hanoi, add a place that changes the rhythm: a coastal town, a countryside stay or a smaller city. The contrast makes the trip feel bigger without adding unnecessary travel days.
Keep the plan flexible
Book the first nights and the major transport, then leave space for weather, local recommendations and the place you unexpectedly want to stay longer.
Plan around the season
Vietnam has different weather across the north, centre and south, so check the conditions for each stop before locking in a route. Pack breathable layers, comfortable shoes and a light rain option. The forecast is part of the itinerary, not an afterthought.
Get around without overpacking
Domestic flights save time on longer distances, while trains and buses can turn the journey into part of the trip. Keep your luggage manageable so moving between cities does not become the main character.
Eat with curiosity
Try local dishes where they are busy, ask what the house speciality is and save room for coffee, fruit and street snacks. You do not need a viral food checklist to eat well.
The simple route
Start with Hanoi, add one slower stop, and finish somewhere that matches your energy. Vietnam rewards a flexible plan, so leave enough space to follow the good recommendation you did not see coming.
